Paper Research

I wanted to make my magazine as close to the 1960s programmes as I could in the timeframe given, so after looking at the paper they used and looking at other samples I decided that I needed a low gsm silk-coated paper. The closest I could get was a 120 gsm silk-coated white paper, which had a very similar finish to the programmes.

However, due to the age of the programmes, the paper have yellowed quite a bit and also had an old smell.  So I wanted to try and recreate the yellowed look of the paper, so I tried putting coffee or tea on there and then experimented with different strengths as I didn't want it to look tacky. I found a lighter coffee wash was better as it still looked a little bit textured and changed the colour slightly.

Another thing I wanted to try to try and get it to seem as authentic as possible was to put the paper back in the boxes of my Grandad'd old things to see if I could try and get it to smell old as well as look old. I let a test piece in there for a week and when it came out it did smell old, however, the smell faded after a day so it wasn't worth it.
